Already Staying in Kintamani? How to Arrange a Mount Batur Guide Without the Full Tour Package

A growing number of guests write to us from guesthouses in Kintamani itself, not Kuta or Ubud, asking the same question: can you just send a guide, since we do not need the pickup?

Most of what we publish assumes a guest is staying somewhere in South Bali or Ubud and needs the full arrangement: hotel pickup in the middle of the night, transport to the trailhead, the trek itself, and the ride back. But we get a steady stream of a different kind of request, from travelers who are already based in Kintamani, Toya Bungkah, Penelokan, or one of the villages right around the lake. They do not need a driver. They do not need a hotel pickup. What they actually need is a licensed guide to take them up Mount Batur, and nothing else.

Enough guests asked for exactly this that we built a dedicated tour around it, priced and bookable the same way as everything else on our site.

You still need a guide, even staying this close

It is a reasonable assumption that being a few minutes from the trailhead changes the rules. It does not. The guide requirement on Mount Batur is not about distance or transport logistics. It is a licensing and check-in system run through the regional tourism office, enforced at the entry post in Toya Bungkah regardless of where you slept the night before. Staying a hundred meters from the trail does not exempt you from checking in with a registered guide before you start climbing. If anything, guests staying locally tend to already know this, which is usually why they are asking us directly instead of trying to wing it.

Who actually asks for this

The requests we get tend to fall into a few recognizable groups. Photographers and long-stay guests based in Kintamani for several nights, who want the flexibility to pick their own morning depending on cloud cover rather than lock in a date months ahead. Travelers who drove or arranged their own transport into the area and just need the guide and the check-in handled. Guests who already did the full packaged trek once, loved it, and want to repeat the climb on a later visit without paying again for pickup they do not need. And people whose Bali itinerary already has them in Kintamani for another reason entirely, coffee touring or cycling through the highlands, who decide partway through their stay that they want to add the volcano on.

Why this exists as its own tour

This started as a one-off arrangement we worked out individually with each guest who asked. Enough people asked the same thing, already staying nearby, not needing transport, just wanting a licensed guide for the climb, that it stopped making sense to treat it as a special case every time. So we built it into its own tour, with its own listing, instead of routing every request through a direct message first.

Why we built it this way

We built this business around direct, local relationships rather than routing everything through a platform, which is the same thinking covered in why we would rather you book with us directly. Our guides live in Kintamani. The area around the volcano is their home, not just a job site they commute into, so a request like this, someone already staying nearby who just wants a local guide, fits exactly what we are set up to do. It is not an inconvenient edge case we tolerate. It is closer to the original version of this work than the fully packaged tour is.

What's included in this tour

It is built around the parts of the experience that change when you are not coming from South Bali:

  • A licensed guide, registered and checked in through the same system covered in what a licensed guide actually does
  • Meeting at the trailhead in Toya Bungkah, or at your accommodation if it is nearby and that is easier
  • The sunrise climb itself (a sunset climb is available by request), at whatever pace suits your group, with the same honest expectations about difficulty covered in our difficulty guide

What is generally not included, because it is specific to our full packaged tours: hotel pickup from outside the Kintamani area, breakfast at the summit, and the hot springs or coffee plantation stops that come with our longer combination tours. Check the tour listing for the exact inclusions and current pricing by group size.

How to book this tour

You can now book this tour directly: Mount Batur Sunrise Trek, Guide Only. Check availability and pricing there for your group size. If you would rather talk it through first, especially for an unusual group size or a combined request, message us on WhatsApp and we will sort out the details.

FAQ

Is a guide-only arrangement cheaper than the full tour? Yes, since you are not paying for transport, breakfast, or the other add-ons built into the packaged tours. Check the tour listing for the current price by group size.

Do you still need a minimum group size? No fixed minimum. The tour is priced by group size, so check the listing for the rate at your numbers, or message us if you are not sure which tier fits.

Can this be arranged last minute, like the same day? Sometimes, depending on guide availability, but we cannot promise it. Reaching out a day ahead gives us a much better chance of confirming someone.

Is sunset trekking available this way too, not just sunrise? Yes, by request. The tour is listed as a sunrise trek; message us on WhatsApp to arrange a guide-only sunset climb instead.

We are staying in Kintamani but want the hot springs too, just not the transport. Is that possible? Ask when you message us. Since this is arranged individually anyway, we can usually build in the pieces you actually want rather than the full fixed package.

Where do we actually meet the guide? Either at the trailhead in Toya Bungkah or at your accommodation, depending on where you are staying and what is easiest. We will confirm the meeting point once your dates are set.
